The Brand Safety Institute (BSI), the advertising industry’s community of practice for brand and people safety, announced today that AJ Brown has joined the organization as Chief Operating Officer. In this role for BSI, Brown will focus on growing BSI’s influence in the industry and bringing his unique perspective on brand safety from the former Twitter (now X). As part of his agenda for BSI, he  will orchestrate BSI’s growth as the brand safety field expands and harmonize operations across its editorial, educational, and partnership endeavors.

“AJ brings a rare combination of experience as a brand safety professional, strong relationships across the industry, and a track record of building and managing growing teams to successful outcomes,” said BSI CEO and co-founder, Neal Thurman. “We couldn’t ask for a stronger brand safety veteran to add to the BSI leadership team and look forward to AJ’s leadership as we continue to grow our efforts to serve the digital advertising community.”

Brown most recently served as Head of Brand Safety and Ad Quality at Twitter, where he was charged with ensuring that the platform delivered a positive advertising experience by serving high-quality ads in brand-safe environments. In addition to establishing Twitter’s Brand Safety practice, in his nearly seven years with the company Brown was a driving force in company milestones including the development and enforcement of civic integrity policies for ads, enhancements in transparency, and the creation of the Global Alliance for Responsible Media. His work to promote responsible monetization at Twitter aligns perfectly with BSI’s mission to continuously drive a healthy and sustainable advertising ecosystem.

“I’ve had the privilege of working with BSI since 2019, as part of the inaugural cohort of certified Brand Safety Officers”, Brown said. “BSI provides access to foundational knowledge, practical tools, and a peer-to-peer community of professionals across the advertising industry, all doing this important work. These resources were critical as my team built out Twitter’s brand safety operations. I’m excited to leverage my experience building brand safety operations and the amazing work BSI has accomplished over the last five years to deliver value for our partners.”

“I have worked with AJ on behalf of BSI in his role at Twitter for the last several years. I am especially excited to be able to work hand in hand with such a smart and committed professional in the brand safety space,” said Louis Jones, BSI’s Chief Marketing Officer. “He brings a tremendous wealth of knowledge on practices and protocols — the BSI community will benefit greatly from his new role at BSI.”
